Apesar de não haver espécies novas, a importância da descoberta deve-se à dimensão dos indívíduos que, segundo os investigadores, são os maiores do mundo.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span id="ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_txtTextos"  style="font-size:11;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span id="ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_txtTextos"  style="font-size:11;"&gt;“São as maiores trilobites do mundo”, disse logo Artur Sá ao PÚBLICO, co-autor com uma equipa espanhola do artigo publicado este mês na revista "Geology".Em Canelas, no Geoparque Arouca, estão descritas 20 espécies de trilobites – um dos fósseis mais representado da era do Paleozóico. As trilobites viveram durante mais de 280 milhões de anos até desaparecerem há 250 milhões de anos quando se deu a grande extinção do final do período Pérmico, antes da era dos dinossauros.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span id="ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_txtTextos"  style="font-size:11;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span id="ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_txtTextos"  style="font-size:11;"&gt;Na pedreira de Arouca, só cinco ou seis espécies é que apresentaram um tamanho fenomenal. Habitualmente, as espécies não ultrapassam os dez centímetros, aqui a maioria ultrapassava os 30 centímetros e o maior fóssil tem 86 centímetros de comprimento.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span id="ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_txtTextos"  style="font-size:11;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span id="ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_txtTextos"  style="font-size:11;"&gt;A culpa é dos pólos. Há 465 milhões de anos a zona da Arouca perto de Aveiro estava submersa e ficava pertíssimo do pólo sul, junto da costa do continente chamado Gondwana. O frio e as águas com uma baixa concentração de oxigénio permitiram às trilobites crescerem mais, num ambiente protegido em que seres maiores com um metabolismo mais lento estariam bem adaptados. Segundo o paleontólogo, este “gigantismo polar” é uma característica que acontece hoje em muitos artrópodes - filo que engloba os insectos e os crustáceos - que vivem em condições parecidas.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span id="ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_txtTextos"  style="font-size:11;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span id="ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_txtTextos"  style="font-size:11;"&gt;Mas esta descoberta também lança luzes sobre o comportamento social destes animais. “Até agora o que se conhecia eram indivíduos solitários, aqui temos uma grande quantidade de trilobites todas juntas e metros e metros sem trilobites”, explicou Artur Sá, que é professor do departamento de Geologia da UTAD. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span id="ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_txtTextos"  style="font-size:11;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span id="ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_txtTextos"  style="font-size:11;"&gt;O investigador aponta duas razões que podem explicar o fenómeno: no mar, as trilobites juntavam-se para as mudas das carapaças, ficando agregadas para se protegerem enquanto as novas estruturas enrijeciam. Parte dos fósseis são das mudas e não de trilobites, o que dá força a esta teoria. Por outro lado, o objectivo do ajuntamento poderia ser a reprodução, como acontece em artrópodes actuais. O maior grupo de trilobites encontrado em Arouca pertencia à espécie &lt;i&gt;Ectillaenus giganteus&lt;/i&gt;, e contava com mais de mil indivíduos com 15 a 20 centímetros que preenchiam uma área de 15 metros quadrados.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span id="ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_txtTextos"  style="font-size:11;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span id="ctl00_ContentPlaceHolder1_txtTextos"  style="font-size:11;"&gt;Muitos fósseis mostram trilobites encolhidas, provavelmente pela falta de oxigénio. Por questões paleoambientais o mar nesta região teria baixas concentrações do gás. Graças ao seu tamanho e ao baixo metabolismo, teoriza-se que as trilobites poderiam descer até profundidades de 150 metros para se alimentar de partículas orgânicos. O local é especialmente conhecido pelas &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;trilobites gigantes&lt;/span&gt; (até 70 cm) de idade ordovícica, várias das quais transitaram já para os melhores museus da Europa.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Actualmente a pedreira (que é explorada pela família Valério há cerca de 100 anos) é alvo de um projecto que visa a preservação e a divulgação dos seus fósseis, nomeadamente através da criação do "Centro Interpretativo e Geológico de Canelas- Arouca" do qual fazem parte um museu no local, trilhos e painéis explicativos da geologia.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;As trilobites         &lt;/span&gt;                                 &lt;p&gt;As trilobites eram artrópodes marinhos que viveram exclusivamente nos mares do &lt;em&gt;Paleozóico&lt;/em&gt; (542-251 &lt;em&gt;Ma&lt;/em&gt;). A maioria vivia em ambientes pouco profundos, arrastando-se pelo fundo, deixando por vezes marcas fossilizadas, denominadas &lt;em&gt;cruzianas&lt;/em&gt; (conhecidas também por bilobites), que também se encontram nesta jazida. Em Canelas os fósseis ocorrem num estrato com cerca de 100 m de espessura, de idade Ordovícica,  mais especificamente do &lt;em&gt;Oretaniano&lt;/em&gt; inferior, com cerca de 465 &lt;em&gt;Ma&lt;/em&gt;. Esse estrato faz parte do sulco Dúrico-Beirão, tendo uma apreciável continuidade geográfica e estando particularmente bem estudado (desde o século XIX)  na região de Valongo.&lt;br /&gt;As principais espécies encontradas em Canelas são: &lt;em&gt;Ectillaenus giganteus, Hungioides boehmicus, Neseuretus avus, Nobiliasaphus delesse, Ogyginus forteyi, Placoparia cambriensis, Retamaspis melendezi, Colpocoryphe thorali conjugens. &lt;/em&gt;Algumas destas espécies eram cosmopolitas, outras tinham uma pequenas repartição geográfica. O gigantismo destas trilobites deve-se, em parte (30-40 %), à dilatação associada com a deformação, já que o plano da foliação da ardósia coincide com o da estratificação original. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;A importância das trilobites desta jazida foi oficialmente reconhecida em 1999 com a inclusão de uma trilobite no brasão da freguesia de Canelas. Esta é a segunda representação de fósseis em heráldicas, em todo o mundo.&lt;/p&gt;As trilobites são classificadas com base nas  características morfológicas. A designação desta classe de artrópodes resulta do seu corpo estar segmentado, longitudinalmente, em três partes. Esta estrutura geológica é         formada, geralmente, a partir do encontro entre placas litosféricas. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;Quando um vulcão entra em erupção (em actividade) pode provocar         &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;terremotos&lt;/span&gt; e lançar na atmosfera grande quantidade de materiais         magmáticos, gerando uma ameaça para as populações que moram         próximas. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;Os principais vulcões do mundo são: Etna (Sicília), Monte         Fuji (Japão), Kilauea (Havai), Krakatoa (Indonésia), Monte Pinatubo         (Filipinas), Vesúvio (Itália) e El Chichon (México).&lt;br /&gt;Os &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;sismos&lt;/span&gt; podem ou não estar associados a fenómenos de vulcanismo.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;Também conhecido como sismo, o &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;terremoto&lt;/span&gt; é um fenómeno geológico caracterizado por uma forte e rápida vibração da superfície terrestre.&lt;br /&gt;Um terremoto pode ter como causa o choque entre placas tectónicas subterrâneas, a erupção de vulcão ou deslocamento de gases no interior do planeta Terra (situação mais rara). Num terremoto ocorrem aberturas de falhas na superfície terrestre e &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;deslizamentos de terras.&lt;/span&gt; Quando ocorrem no mar, podem provocar &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;tsunamis &lt;/span&gt;(ondas marítimas gigantes).&lt;br /&gt;     Um terremoto libera uma quantidade muito grande de energia, podendo provocar estragos e muita destruição quando atinge regiões habitadas.&lt;br /&gt;     De acordo com sua&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt; intensidade (magnitude sísmica) &lt;/span&gt;podem ser classificados através da &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Escala de Richter (de 0 a 9)&lt;/span&gt;. Quanto mais alto o grau, mais forte é o terremoto. style="text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;A Deriva dos Continentes&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Os continentes se afastam constantemente nalgumas partes do globo e, se aproximam noutras. Mas não são apenas os continentes a deslocar-se, também o fundo do oceano se mexe e, é este movimento do fundo dos oceanos que provoca o afastamento dos continentes.&lt;br /&gt;Mas, durante séculos nada disto se sabia, todos achavam que os continentes se mantinham imóveis, desde o dia da sua formação. Ninguém se atrevia a imaginar uma movimentação constante das massas continentais.&lt;br /&gt;Até que, no início do século XX, um senhor chamado &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Wegener&lt;/span&gt; se lembrou de estudar em pormenor o nosso planeta e, se deu conta de um conjunto de evidências que faziam supor a movimentação dos continentes. Ele deu-se conta que estes tinham estado todos unidos há mais de 200 milhões de anos. Essas evidências ou argumentos foram essencialmente de três tipos: &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;geográficos&lt;/span&gt;, &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;paleontológicos&lt;/span&gt; e &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;paleoclimáticos&lt;/span&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;Mas esta &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Teoria da Deriva Continental&lt;/span&gt; proposta por Wegener em 1910, não foi aceite na época, por ser demasiado revolucionária e, por não esclarecer, de modo convincente, qual a força que fazia mexer as grandes massas continentais.&lt;br /&gt;Só na década de 50 do século passado é que novas descobertas, essencialmente ao nível do fundo dos oceanos, utilizando novas tecnologias, permitiram dar crédito finalmente à teoria de Wegener. Surgiu então uma nova teoria, a &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Teoria da Tectónica de Placas.&lt;/span&gt; Esta teoria nos diz que existe um conjunto de &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;placas litosféricas&lt;/span&gt;, formando uma espécie de puzzle, que se movimentam umas em relação às outras, havendo regiões onde se afastam, outras em que se estão aproximando ou colidindo e, outras onde estão deslizando paralelamente. Nessas regiões de limite das placas é onde se concentram a esmagadora maioria dos &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;sismos &lt;/span&gt;e dos fenómenos de &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;vulcanismo&lt;/span&gt;. São as regiões do nosso planeta mais activas e mais instáveis.&lt;br /&gt;De seguida, podes ter acesso a dois powerpoints e a vídeos que te irão elucidar a respeito deste tema super-interessante
